A six-round all-play-all competition, comprising the holder, the Lindsay Cup holder, the next four highest-graded players who wish to take part, plus one qualifier from the preliminary knockout section.
Time control: 36 moves in 72 minutes, followed by an allegro finish of 15 minutes each.
In the event of a tie for first and second places, the winner of the individual game between the two players will take first place. If the individual game was drawn, a second game will be played at the original rate with colours reversed. If further replays are needed they will be played at the rate of 30 minutes each for all moves. In the event of a three-way (or more) tie, first place will be decided by a mini-tournament at the rate of 30 minutes per player per game. The competition secretary is Dave Hewitt, and his decision in competition-related matters is final. Feel free to ask him about any queries you might have.
The Richardson Cup has been played for annually, with only a few breaks, since 1894 (when the winner was Sergeant-Major Bethune). Maxwell Thornton won it 15 times, between 1959 and 1988. Next most is six, by A W Gray (1896–1910), George Owen (1920–1930) and James Keddie (1925–1964), and current member Paul Prescott (2007-2012). Only three other current members have won it: Steve Smith four times (1989, 1991–1993), John Blake twice (2005, 2006) and Tony Pitson (1990).
