Keddie Cup 2015

Congratulations to Sam Cook, winner of the 2015 Keddie Cup handicap tournament! Starting as the lowest graded player in the tournament, Sam calmly beat every player put up against him, winning all of his group games and progressing through the knock-out stages to the final against Gordon Allcock. Starting a Queen and Knight down and with only three minutes to Sam's ten, Gordon made a good job of frustrating Sam's attacks, until, down to seconds, Gordon blundered a Rook which also turned out to be checkmate. Well done Sam!

Bill Cook presents Sam with the trophy.

Thanks to everyone who turned up, and special thanks to Dave Hewitt for his organisation.

Games

Thanks to Jim, Neil, and Dave for providing their games from recent matches against Dunfermline. Neil's will have to wait a while, until I can make his extensive analysis work on this website. In the meantime - the first game here is Jim Shemilt v Ian Robertson, where Jim had White.

An exciting match which could have gone either way. Steve drew from a rook down (with a perpetual check that could only be stopped by giving back the rook, which would have left Steve up three pawns). I snatched a draw in time-trouble, by forcing perpetual check. Dave won a fine endgame against Ian. David apparently lost after being a rook up.

The first game below is my effort from board 3, where I had White against John Smith. I stopped recording at move 34, having less than five minutes left. 42 Qd3 was my saviour, if I didn;t have that it was certain defeat.

A good point for the C team, in a match where they were outgraded on all boards. Mick's win on board 5 secured the match point for the C team, in a tough rook and pawn ending where he was well down on time. David's win came first, followed by Craig's draw, but Dunfermline pulled themselves back into the match with wins from Ben and Bryan. The game below comes from board 3, where David had White against Douglas Rew.

Scottish Championships - Steve Smith and Neil Irving

Dave Hewitt writes:- Steve and Neil played in the 122nd Scottish championships which ended last weekend. The event was held at Stewart's Melville school in Edinburgh - very swish, and a pleasant venue from what I could see during my visit one afternoon. It was a nine-day open, with around 100 players.

Both Stirling players did pretty well in what was a strong competition. Steve scored 50% with a tournament performance of 1769, and finished with a win (game below) which is always nice. Neil managed 4/9 although one of his points came via a default against an opponent who didn't appear due to illness. Neil's tournament performance was 1725, and although he tailed off a bit at the end he did have one great result, drawing with the Edinburgh-based Irish IM Mark Orr in round 4, despite a grading gap of over 450 points. It could have been even better - Neil had the IM completely on the run with a tremendous attack, and missed a mate-in-three.

Irving - Orr

Thanks also to Steve for providing his last round game, where he had White against Vipin Zamvar of Edinburgh.

Smith - Zamvar

Black resigned after 22 Qxh7+ with 22 ... Kg5 23 Qh5#.

Richardson Cup - Congratulations to Paul Prescott!

The first of many belated updates...Congratulations to Paul Prescott, winner of the Richardson Cup for the ninth season in a row. The last game of the competition saw Paul play Shivan needing just a draw to retain the trophy, and an 18 move (but 2 hours long) sharp affair resulted in the draw he needed. Well done Paul!.

Robert Togneri Trophy

Mr Robert Togneri with the new club trophy, named in his honour for 50+ years service to the club.

The Stirling club has a fine collection of trophies presented in memory of notable members who are sadly no longer with us – the Richardson, Lindsay, Keddie and Thornton cups – but it is nice to also have something named after a club stalwart who is happily still around and actively playing chess.

Hence the Robert Togneri Trophy, pictured here being held by the man himself. The trophy marks Robert’s half-century of continuous membership of Stirling chess club – a membership that has now stretched beyond the 51-year mark, as he joined the club in the autumn of 1963 and played his first league match on 1 April 1964 (a board-four draw against J Allan of Dunfermline in a match which Stirling won 4½-½, the four wins coming courtesy of a strong line-up of Maxwell Thornton, J Rodger, James Keddie and D S Buchanan).

Robert has been with us ever since, and while his playing strength is less than once was (he made two appearances in the Scottish championship – at Ayr in 1968 and Glasgow in 1969 – when it was by qualification only), he is still a very handy player more than capable of chalking up wins in league matches and club tournaments. His heyday was in the time of adjournment sessions and home analysis, and woe betide anyone who takes Robert lightly in terms of endgame subtleties: these remain a strong and notable feature of his play.

The Robert Togneri Trophy itself will go to the winner of the twice-yearly club Swiss allegro tournament, the twentieth edition of which (and the first with an actual prize) was played in May. This saw the title shared by Bill Cook and Jim Shemilt, each of whom scored 4/5. They will be presented with the trophy – and can then debate who gets to keep it first – during the annual club curry night at the end of this month or in early July. With luck Robert will be there to make the presentation himself.

Although the trophy isn’t the kind that can be engraved with winners’ names – that would be tricky anyway, given the long history of the Swiss allegros (the first was held in January 2005) – by happy circumstance Robert once won the tournament that now bears his name. He was one of four joint-winners of the fifth edition, held in November 2007 – and who knows if he might not win it again in what everyone at the club hopes will be a long and happy chess-playing future for one of Stirling’s most notable, liked and well-respected players.

18 May 2015 - Robert Togneri Trophy

Dave Hewitt writes: There were 13 players and first place was shared by Bill and Jim - two more first-time winners, good to see, after Robin was a similar first-time winner of the autumn edition. The final round began with any of the highest four graders able to top the table, and in the event Jim beat Neil while Bill and Graham drew.

There were some impressive results further down the order. Mick had what is probably his best-ever result in these tournaments with 3/5, while David L continued to show a lot of promise, only playing four rounds but starting with a draw against me (when I was lucky to survive a two-pawns-down ending) followed by wins against Gordon and Craig. Perhaps the standout result of the night however was young James's r2 win against David B. All these things augur well for the future of the club.

George Anderson Clarke - 1924-2015

Sad news: George Clarke, long-time member of Stirling chess club, died last Saturday on Mull, where he had been living with his daughter Rhona and family for the past few years. He was 90. George was a keen player rather than a strong one, and put in a great amount of effort at the club, being secretary and competitions organiser until the middle of the last decade. He was particularly keen on seeing juniors take up the game. He was very energetic on the publicity side of things, using his various contacts to organise chess displays at shops such as Tesco and also submitting weekly reports and puzzles to the Stirling Observer. He liked to see the season end with the club's strongest player giving a simultaneous display against the rest of the club, a tradition that has lapsed in recent years.

George was certainly a significant, distinctive and widely known member of Stirling chess club (he joined in 1985 and retained his membership even after the move to Mull), and he never missed a chance to mention it in a wider context, for instance there is a page about the club in the memoir which he produced in 2013. He was also a good friend of the club stalwart and strong player Maxwell Thornton, and with his passing another link with those days has gone.

Condolences to George's family.

Congratulations to the Stirling team on their victory in the Under 1500 Cup. As thing progressed through the evening, a victory did not look likely. A quick draw on board 4, followed by victory for Dunfermline on board 3 left Dunfermline in the driving seat. Martyn's game finished as a draw, and Derek finally succumbed to Craig's pressure (despite Craig playing for much of the game with one of the worst bishops in chess) to leave the match at 2-2. All eyes turned to board 1, where it looked dead drawn (White's rook and 3 pawns against Black's Bishop and 5 pawns, all pieces on the Queens side). A draw would have given the Cup to Dunfermline on board count. Unfortunately for Dunfermline, into the allegro finish and with just a few minutes remaining, Bryan missed a discovered attack on his Rook, and lost it completely. He struggled on for a few more moves, but Dave gained another pawn, and his passed e pawn was on its way to promotion before Bryan resigned.

Thoughts from the Badgers Brook allegro match

Dave Hewitt writes:- Kenny McGeoch played an amazing move against me in the Bruce vs Badgers match. It was in the fourth and final round of the night, and I think the game (with Kenny having the white pieces) started as follows:

I'm not sure what Kenny played next - possibly Bf4, or moving the Rf1 - but whatever it was I played 10 ...Nd5 as planned, thinking I'd be able to give him doubled pawns on the c-file once the Q moved. Whereupon Kenny played 11 Qxg7+.

After 11 ...Kxg7 (which I spent about half a minute on even though it was the only move, as I was startled to say the least and needed a bit of time to get my bearings), 12 cxd5 leaves white effectively a piece down but with a lot of activity and initiative.

I can't recall the middle part of the game, but I didn't find a means of simplifying in any way that seemed helpful, and was under constant pressure with Kenny maintaining a bind based on my K being stuck in the corner, his pair of Bs pointing at it, his R on the seventh rank and my f6 pawn pinned against the Kh8. Something like 30 moves later we reached this position, or a close approximation (it's not quite right, as I don't think Kenny had scope for playing Bb4 to attack my Rf8, but it's not far off and anyway it's black to move):

I'd stabilised things a fair bit - freeing up my Q to head towards Kenny's K had felt like quite a triumph - and I knew what I probably should try to do in terms of playing for a win, namely find a way to sac the exchange, put my K on the safe-coloured squares of whichever white B had disappeared, then try and win with Q vs R+B. But I'd been on the defensive all game, the clock was ticking, John had already won his game, a glance along showed that Graham probably should win and Paul wasn't worse, so a draw here ought to help ensure that we didn't lose the match (we needed 2.5/4 in the last round for a draw) and might actually help to win it. So I started playing for a perpetual with Qf2+, and after a few more checks we agreed a draw. I reckoned that so long as I didn't let Kenny's K reach g6, with Kxh6 to follow, I should be OK - so the idea was that if he went Kf5 I needed to be able to play Qd3+.

So it was drawn, and after Graham won and Paul drew we managed to win the match. But it was an extraordinary eleventh move by Kenny - a real sense of adventure to it, a let's see where this takes us kind of move, possibly a bit end-of-season-ish as well (and certainly showing confidence that he reckoned he could outplay me from a piece down). A computer or a stronger player would most likely dismiss it as simply winning for black. But over-the-board, with Kenny being a lot stronger than me, it was hard to face. It also supported the theory - which Steve Smith has suggested, I think - that Kenny has become quite a bit stronger over the past year or so, and is now quite possibly somewhere close to the 2000 level. It's just a pity that he's a Badgers Brook player these days, rather than still with us...

Anyway, I'm glad he played Qxg7+ - it made for a very interesting game and I can't recall when I was last so wowed by a move, particularly one played so early in a game.

Although technically an away match for Stirling Bruce, this was played at Stirling chess club.

After Dunfermline Minnows' recent 14-2 victory over Badgers Brook, Bruce had to win by 15-1 (what would be a record victory for any team in this league) to retain the league title. This hugely unlikely score became simply a dream as the first round of matches finished. Going into the fourth round, Bruce trailed 5½ - 6½, but a last round win of 3-1 gave us the match, but not the title.

Congratulations, then, to Dunfermline Minnows on their league title!
